Northern Saw-Whet Owl
Owling
They are one of our most secrtive owl species along with the other three small mountain owls. I’ve had them call around 4:00 AM in high elevation. Their song is a rapid, fast paste toot lasting about 15 seconds. They also have a long drawn out call that sounds like “waeeeah”.
Habitat
“Previous workers in Colorado observed that saw-whets dwell more in ponderosa pine woodlands or ponderosa pine mixed with Douglas-fir than in other forest types (Webb 1982b, Jones 1991).”S1.
Range
Red- summer, purple- resident, blue- winter, yellow- migration.
